Course Description

The second of the GE writing courses emphasizes the development of an effective academic style in argumentative essays that makes use of traditional rhetorical patterns, culminating in a major research paper. Subtopics will vary. Students with ACT English scores below 29 must take ENGL 1010 or ENGL 1010E before enrolling in 2010. Learning Outcomes

ENGL 2010
1. Sources and Evidence: Locate, evaluate, and integrate credible and relevant sources to achieve various writing purposes.
2. Genre Awareness: Demonstrate critical and conceptual awareness of genre in reading and writing—including organization, content, presentation, formatting, and stylistic choices.
3. Context and Purpose: Analyze rhetorical situations and adapt to the audience, purpose, modalities, and the circumstances surrounding a range of reading and writing tasks.
4. Language Awareness and Usage: Recognize and make intentional, critical, and contextually-informed language choices across a range of rhetorical contexts/situations.
5. Recursive Writing Processes: Develop flexible, iterative, and reflective processes for invention, drafting, workshopping, and revision.


Course Requirements

Requirements: To pass this course you must complete all the major assignments, fulfill all weekly assignments, and submit all assignments on time. 

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

There is no secret shortcut to good writing: it just takes time. While this course and its due dates are paced to help you manage your time through a large, sustained research project over 14 weeks, I understand that you might need extra time for certain assignments.


Students in good (80pct or above) standing may request extensions on assignments. Requests must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the deadline. I reserve the right to decline requests.


Workshops that do not receive an extension will receive a 1 point deduction per day late.


Essays (other than the final essay) may be accepted one week late without penalty. Thereafter they will be docked 10 points each day they are late. All assignments, including Major Assignment #4, must be submitted by the last due date of the course. Any work submitted after this date will not be accepted.


Due to their social nature most discussion assignments are not accepted late. Initial Posts must be submitted by the Friday they are due--posts received by the end of that Sunday may receive partial credit. Initial Posts submitted later than Sunday will not receive credit. Second and third posts (in response to classmates) must be submitted by the Tuesday they are due. Second and third posts submitted after Tuesday will not receive credit.


Regarding Feedback on Workshops and Discussions. Feedback will not be given on most workshops unless you include specific, thoughtful questions regarding your work for me to respond to. Giving (and receiving and incorporating) instructor feedback in a writing class should be more like a conversation rather than a one sided activity. Feedback and line comments will be given on all Major Assignments (unless substantially late). 


Generative AI


I neither encourage nor condone the use of generative artificial intelligence in the writing process. I believe the use of such instruments to “lessen our work load” or “speed up tasks” or “do the work” is detrimental to us as writers. I believe all stages of the writing process, including the hard ones, the boring ones, the slow ones, the tedious ones, are fundamental to the writing process. When we short change the process we not only short change our work but we further short change ourselves as thinking human beings. To this end, any assignment found to use generative AI at any stage in its development will earn a “0” grade.

Assignments

Major Assignments:

The major assignments this semester are interconnected, building as they go. Major Assignment #1, is the Research Proposal. Your proposal will further develop your understanding of the topic that you establish in this Major Assignment #1.

You will then submit a Progress Report. This report will inform me of your research and writing progress as you build from Proposal to Argument.

Your fourth major assignment, the Major Research Project, is the culmination of the class. Major Assignment #3 is a 10-12 page essay wherein you will argue for a response to a problem or issue related to mis/disinformation.  

Low Stakes Assignments:

Workshops: Most weeks you will have 1-2 workshop assignments due by the end of the day on Tuesday. These workshops will elaborate on concepts introduced in the discussions or help you work toward your next Major Assignment.

Discussions: Each week you will respond to the posted discussion prompt with an Initial Post of 250 (or more) words. This Initial Post must be written in multiple paragraphs. Each paragraph should include a topic sentence, specific evidence, and an explanation of the evidence. Posts should be edited for style and clarity. Initial Posts are worth 5 points. Initial Posts will be due every Friday. Late posts submitted by Sunday night will receive half credit.

You will respond to Initial Posts by at least two classmates. Each response post must be a minimum of 75 words. Longer responses must be written in multiple paragraphs. Response Posts must go beyond "I agree/disagree" or "good job" type posts. They must further the conversation in some substantial way. Response posts should also be edited for style and clarity. Each response post is worth 2.5 points. Response posts will be due every Tuesday.

This is an asynchronous course, meaning that you will work at your own pace as long as you meet assignment deadlines in accordance with the course late work policy.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
