Course Description

This is the first of a two-course series designed to ground students in the theories, concepts, and applications of finance with an emphasis on financial ratios, time value of money, project analysis, cost of capital, and risk management. (Fall, Spring, Summer) [Graded (Standard Letter)] Prerequisite(s): ACCT 2010 and MATH 1040 and (MATH 1050 or ACT Math Subscore of 26+ or ALEKS placement score of 75+)MATH 1050 - Prerequisite Min. Welcome to FIN 3250 - Managerial Finance I. You will find this course to be one of the most useful courses in your future career, whether you are working in Management, Marketing, or some other discipline. During this semester, we will be covering some basic skills and ideas that are applicable to every area of business, will aid in future investing strategies, and will give you a framework for evaluating competing options and making better decisions.

Announcements
I strongly recommend that you turn on Announcements in this class. This is how I will communicate important and helpful information to the class. It is your responsibility to monitor Announcements.

Quizzes
Quizzes are done online and independently. You may use your notes and the textbook, and you may use Excel, but you may not use Excel while taking the exams. I suggest that you treat these quizzes as mini-exams. Quizzes are aligned with chapter readings to test your comprehension. Each quiz will consist of multiple-choice questions which will be similar in style and content to what you will see on the exams. There is a time limit of 50 minutes per attempt, you get two (2) attempts, and Canvas will keep the highest score. CAs and I can offer guidance to you if you can demonstrate that you have made a serious attempt at the problem, or after you have hit the submit button. All Quizzes must be submitted by the due date. See Late Policy.

Connect
Connect assignments are done online and independently. You may use your notes and the textbook, and you may use Excel (but you may not use Excel while taking the exams). I suggest that you treat these sets as mini-exams. In Connect, there is no time limit, you get one attempt (which means you can leave and come back to work, until you hit the submit button), hints are free, and you can check your answer 10 times per problem before you submit, but there is a 10% penalty each time you check. In other words, if you are confident in your answers, go ahead and submit without checking your answers. If the answer is correct, you get full points; if is incorrect you get no points. So, if you are not so sure about your answer, go ahead and check your answer, but you will incur a 10% penalty each time you do so. CAs and I can offer guidance to you if you can demonstrate that you have made a serious attempt at the problem, or after you have hit the submit button. All Connect assignments must be submitted by the due date. Connect Assignments are due midnight before each exam opens. See Late Policy.

Exams
Exams are done online and independently. You may use your notes and the textbook.  However, you may not use Excel while taking the exam. There are four online, timed, non-cumulative exams which you can take online anytime over a two-day period. The exams cover the material in the Modules tab in Canvas. In modules, there is an "About Exam" page for each exam. See Academic Integrity Policy 6.33. Again, no Excel, please take exams with a financial calculator, such as the HP 10b or the TI BA II. See Late Policy.

While exams are open, for obvious reasons, CAs and I cannot help you with problems, and there will be no office hours.

Files
In Canvas, under Files, you'll see a directory called Items to Prepare for Exam > Student. It contains files which students in the past have found extremely helpful when taking Quizzes, working Connect problems, and preparing for exams.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

  • Before you ask me to excuse a missed or late assignment or exam, refer back to this policy.
  • Student Affairs has the authority to grant or deny excused absences.
  • Without an excused absence, work will be considered late or missing, no exceptions.
If you plan to miss or missed an exam or an assignment, or submitted an assignment after the due date, SUU Policy requires that you petition The Office of Student Affairs for an excused absence. Student Affairs can issue an excused absence if your circumstances are extenuating. The obvious ones are death or serious illness in your family, birth of a child, serious personal illness (this includes a documented positive COVID test and mental illness). If you have a disability, contact the Office of Disabilities.
  • I respect your privacy. If you missed an assignment or submitted one late and you want to petition Student Affairs for an excused absence, share your extenuating circumstances with them. You do not need to tell me highly personal details. You'll find that the professionals at Student Affairs are kind, fair, and supportive. Visit Student Affairs to learn about available resources. If your situation is serious, they can grant an excused absence.
  • I respect your right to self-advocacy. If you feel that your circumstances are serious enough to justify missing or submitting late work, talk with Student Affairs. They are fair and professional. If, in their judgement, your circumstances are extenuating, they can grant an excused absence.
  • I respect your ability to prioritize and weigh consequences. It is your decision whether to choose skiing over a quiz, project, or exam.

Attendance Policy

This is an online class.  I highly recommend that you regularly attend zoom office hours.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Academic Freedom

Academic Misconduct

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). You are expected to have read and understood the current SUU student conduct code (SUU Policy 11.2) regarding student responsibilities and rights, the intellectual property policy (SUU Policy 5.52), information about procedures, and what constitutes acceptable behavior.

Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
