Course Description

This introductory marketing class focuses on the basic principles of Marketing, including Value, Exchange, The Marketing Mix, Environmental Forces, Segmentation, Targeting, Positioning, Branding, Product Management, Supply Chain Management, Marketing Ethics, Sustainability, Consumer Behavior, Services Marketing, CRM, IMC, Personal Selling, Pricing, Marketing Research Techniques, and Marketing Careers. 

Required Texts

Marketing, by Hunt and Mello, 4th edition with Connect Access Card.  Electronic version of the textbook comes with Connect Access.  Hardback and paperback versions are optional.

Learning Outcomes

  • We will discuss the basic Principles of Marketing, and the role marketing managers play in accomplishing best marketing practices. By the completion of this course the student should, at minimum, be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of key terminology and frameworks in marketing 
  1. Demonstrate the ability to apply marketing tools for analyzing customers, competition as well as for assessing the firms’ internal strengths and weaknesses 
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of how marketing contributes to achieving the strategic objectives of the firm 
  3. Demonstrate the ability to incorporate ethical decision-making strategies to day to day marketing decisions
  4. Apply the principles learned in this course in developing and presenting a marketing plan with a group for a relevant product and service that have specific implications for the increasingly digital and interconnected business environment of today 

The following are additional goals of this course: 
  • Leadership: Students will have the opportunity to lead his/her team in its performance of the group project
  • Communication: Students will have the opportunity to communicate in written form in the group project assignment and written assignment 
  • Problem Solving:  Students will have multiple problem-solving opportunities through their group project assignment.
  • Decision Making:  Students will be making decisions regarding marketing decisions in their term project assignment.

Connect/LearnSmart Assignments: McGraw-Hill’s Connect is a web-based assignment and assessment solution required for this course. Connect is designed to assist you with your coursework based on your needs. Connect access codes may be packaged with a new textbook in the bookstore. Connect can also be purchased online at our section’s Connect web address. If you purchase Connect online, you can purchase Connect or Connect Plus, which includes an interactive eBook version of the required textbook for this course. NOTE: You can register in Connect and have access without a code for a limited time (typically two weeks).

McGraw-Hill LearnSmart is an adaptive learning system in McGraw-Hill’s Connect designed to help students learn faster, study more efficiently, and retain more knowledge for greater success.  It is an easy portion of your grade to score highly if you put in the time and effort.  It will also help you score better on each exam (students who spend the required time in Learnsmart have been found to score 11% higher on average in the College of Business).

You are required to spend a minimum of 20 minutes interacting in Learnsmart for each of the 16 chapters.  To get full credit, you must complete the required Learnsmart time for each chapter on a specific exam, before that exam date.  These are all-or-nothing assignments.  It is your responsibility to make sure that in Learnsmart it shows that you have completed each chapter with a 100% score.  

Marketing Journal:  Your assignment is to regularly keep a journal related to this course.  Details are posted in Canvas.  

Perceptual Map Assignment:  There will be a Perceptual Map (See Chapter 7 p. 240-241) assignment.  Details are posted in Canvas and will be discussed in class.

Marketing Simulation and Write-up: Individuals will participate in a marketing simulation project. Details are posted in Canvas and will be discussed in class.

Course Readings and Chapter Quizzes: Each chapter will have a 10 multiple-choice quiz. These quizzes are open-book and open-note. You will have 15 minutes for each quiz, and your lowest three scores will be dropped.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

If you have a valid excuse (e.g., a Doctor’s note, university-sponsored events, death of a close relative, etc.) with documentary proof, you will have an opportunity to make up an exam or quiz. Please contact me at the first opportunity you know you will not be able to meet the deadline so that we can reschedule.

All assignments EXCEPT THE LEARNSMART/CONNECT ASSIGNMENTS and any potential extra credit assignments have a 24-hour grace period for turning in with no penalty (in other words, you will be given full credit for assignments submitted during the grace period).  

However, no assignments will be accepted after the grace period, except under the direst of circumstances (e.g., the death of an immediate family member).  Computer glitches, problems with Canvas, forgetting, vacations, etc., etc., etc. are not valid excuses.  Please make sure to submit your assignments well in advance of this final cut-off period.  Please also ensure you have submitted the correct file and that the file has uploaded correctly when you submit your assignments.  If you do not, they will not be accepted after the final cutoff date and time.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.
