This course introduces the fundamentals of mechanical drafting, architectural drafting, and design using AutoCAD. Emphasis is placed on drafting standards, sketching, geometric construction, orthographic projection, drawing layout, pictorial drawings, dimensioning, and basic architectural design.

Students will develop the skills necessary to create accurate technical drawings using AutoCAD while learning how drafting conventions are used to communicate design and construction information.

The overall objective of this course is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts, techniques, and tools used in technical drafting and design. By the end of the course, students should be able to:

• Apply fundamental drafting standards, conventions, and terminology to technical drawings.
• Use AutoCAD tools and commands to create, modify, organize, and manage accurate technical drawings.
• Apply geometric construction, orthographic projection, and basic layout procedures to develop technical drawings.
• Create section, auxiliary, assembly, and pictorial views.
• Apply appropriate dimensioning, annotation, line types, scales, and drawing organization.
• Develop basic architectural drawings, including residential floor plans and related views.
• Apply basic design and layout principles to technical and architectural drawings.
• Demonstrate accuracy, organization, quality, timeliness, and professional drafting practices.

The final grade is determined from the four categories shown below. The student will have access to his/her homework, quizzes, and test grades throughout the semester on the Canvas grade book.

When creating and submitting homework assignments, quizzes, and tests, make sure the student's name and the assignment name are used in the file name. For example, if I Kayla Schaugaard submitted test 2, the file name should be similar to "KSchaugaard - Test 2.dwg"

Homework - 40%

Homework will consist of AutoCAD drafting exercises, architectural design exercises, textbook questions, drawing assignments, and other activities designed to reinforce the concepts and skills presented in class. Assignments will focus on developing proficiency with AutoCAD tools, commands, drafting standards, layers, dimensions, annotation, and architectural drawing techniques.

Homework requirements and due dates will be listed in Canvas.

Attendance - 15%

Attendance is mandatory and will be recorded daily. Concepts build sequentially, and missing class may result in significant gaps in understanding. Students should arrive on time and remain for the entire session to receive credit. If an absence is unavoidable due to illness, emergency, or a university-approved activity, notify the instructor and take responsibility for catching up on missed work. Excessive absences can hinder success and may negatively impact final grades.

Quizzes/Tests - 20%

There will be quizzes and other assessments throughout the semester designed to evaluate students' understanding of the AutoCAD commands, drafting concepts, and skills presented in class. Assessments may include written questions, practical AutoCAD exercises, or other activities that demonstrate understanding and application of course material.

Final Assessment - 25%

The final assessment will evaluate the student's ability to apply the AutoCAD commands, drafting techniques, architectural concepts, and skills developed throughout the semester. Depending on the course progression, the final assessment may consist of a comprehensive test, final drawing/project, or a combination of both. Students should be prepared to demonstrate their understanding of the material covered throughout the course.

The following grading standards will be used in this class:

Late homework will automatically be reduced to 50%. After 1 week from the due date, it will not be accepted.

There will be no makeup for missed quizzes or assessments unless arrangements have been made with the instructor. Feedback will be provided through Canvas, and students will have an opportunity to ask questions and review areas where additional understanding is needed.

I will respond no more than one business day from when it is sent to me. Feedback is an important part of learning. The most significant feedback will be provided in class when homework assignments, quizzes, and tests will be reviewed. Comments will also be provided in the comments sections of the homework assignments. These comments will be brief. If you have questions from class reviews or the comments sections, please let me know.
