In this course the student will be introduced to the most current 3D solid modeling concepts and principles of parametric design using the CATIA V5 software. The student will be introduced to the process of creating and applying robust design principles to intermediate parametric solid models and assemblies. The process of developing and applying formulas as well as spreadsheets to these parametric designs will be presented and applied. The analysis, animation, and simulation will be presented and applied. The most current solid modeling concepts will be introduced and experienced by the students through lecture, training videos, tutorials, and real design projects. (Fall, Spring)

Solid Modeling has been an integral part of industry in recent years. It is a link between design and manufacturing and construction. Information is quickly communicated to construction and manufacturing companies in the form of drawings prepared to prescribed drafting standards. It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Actually, a drawing is worth much more. The speed of graphic comprehension can approach a rate of 50,000 times that of reading. Human beings have always sought the use of tools to make life easier and to enable them to become more productive.

Specific Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:

2. Create detail drawings from existing solid models

4. Create multiple sketch 3D solid models
5. Create a working system of multiple 3D solid models
6. Edit multiple 3D solid models while in a system environment
7. Simulate multiple 3D solid models while in a system environment
8. Develop introductory design skills
9. Develop advanced assembly design skills

What you will submit

• JPEG of the assignment
• CATPart of the assignment
• CATDrawing of the assignment
• CATProduct of the assignment

You will complete and submit each of the problems at the end of each chapter.

Save all .CATPart files until after we complete Chapter 5. We will use these files to edit and modify existing models. Once you have submitted all assignments in Chapter 5 (and they have been graded), you can delete the .CATPart files.

Out of class time will be required to complete all of the assigned drawings.

Students will work on drawings while in class. Due dates for each assignment will appear in CANVAS.

Save all work until after the completion of Module/Chapter 5. Module/Chapter 5 includes instruction on how to modify existing sketches and Features. If you do not have any of the existing files, you will need to re-create these files so that you can modify them. When we get started working you will see what I am talking about.

Assessment/Evaluation/Grading

Single part Drawings are worth 10 points:

Assembly Drawings are worth 20 points.

Unannounced pop quizzes 30 points:

There will be unannounced “in class” pop quizzes consisting of a drawing that are in alignment with student skill level at that point in the semester. Pop quizzes can also occur consecutively.

Midterm Exam 50 points:

The Midterm exam will be an “in class” exam consisting of a drawing that is in alignment with student skill level at mid semester.

Final Exam 50 points:

The Final exam will be an “in class” exam consisting of a drawing that is in alignment with student skill level at the end of the semester.

Final Course Grade: Final Grades will be awarded as what is shown in CANVAS:

To earn a grade of A students must complete at least 95% of the work and attend class 95% of the time.

Course Structure

This course will use a published written by the instructor. There are 7 Chapters in the book which will be covered in class. Upon completion of each chapter in class, students will complete the problems at the end of each chapter. Once the book is completed, we will finish up the semester with additional drawings that I will provide.

No late work will be accepted.

Instructors Policy on Late Assignments

• No late work of any kind will be accepted after the deadline. Due dates will appear in CANVAS. Know how to read due dates in CANVAS.
• I do not respond to emails asking for deadline extensions
• I do not respond to emails informing me that I need re-open an assignment in CANVAS because students missed the due date
• Submitting work in CANVAS and encountering uploading errors (thinking you have submitted work when in reality you have not, not knowing how to submit work in CANVAS, etc) are not the fault of the instructor and will not result in any of type of deadline extension. If you choose to work off campus on an off campus computer and encounter uploading errors etc, that is also not the fault of the instructor and will not result in any of type of deadline extension.

Make-up/Exam Timing

There is no makeup on any pop quiz.

There is no makeup on the midterm.

There is no makeup on the final. DO NOT ASK TO TAKE THE FINAL EARLY BECAUSE THE ANSWER WILL BE NO. THERE WILL BE A REGULAR FINAL EXAM ONLY GIVEN AND AVAILABLE DURING THE SCHUDLED FINALS TIME ACCORDING TO THE SUU FINALS SCHEDULE.

Communication

I communicate with students over email. Check email regularly.

Attendance will not count towards your grade, However, students are strongly recommended and encouraged to attend each class period. Requirements for assignments will be given in class and may or may not appear in CANVAS. Students who do not attend class regularly are ineligible for any type of out of class tutoring or assistance with assignments.

As the instructor, I override any and all information, (due dates, assignments) found in CANVAS or the syllabus. Changes to any information will only be made on a correctional basis.

There will be none of the following:

• Vulgar jokes or comments said to other students of the same sex or of the opposite sex, or to the instructor.
• Chewing tobacco

Violation of any of these policies will result in an absence.

If by chance you start falling behind though no fault of your own, PLEASE do not drop the class at the first sign of turbulence, please come and visit me. The sooner you come see me, the sooner we can develop a intervention plan to get you back on track. It is not impossible for students to get back on track with a little extra effort. If for some reason you are feeling bad about life in general, come and see me. I can probably provide you with some insight that will help you feel better about everything.
