Introduction to Signal Processing (Face-to-Face)

Course Description

This course will familiarize students with the basic elements of signal processing. It will teach the key concepts in discrete- and continuous-time signals and systems, including frequency-domain analysis, linear time-invariant systems, Fourier transforms, and filtering. The students will learn how to sample and reconstruct analog signals. The course will include a methodology for solving signal processing problems numerically using programming languages (e.g., MATLAB).

  • Perform left-shifting and right-shifting, scaling, time-reversing, sampling, etc.
  • Analyze signals with addition, subtraction, multiplication and convolution techniques.
  • Analyze and design linear systems, LTI systems, and digital filters. Learn AC parameters and basic rules.
  • Apply Octave/MATLAB software to simulate different types of signals.

Program Goals for the Course 

  •  To understand the unified mathematical theory of representing signals and systems that keep appearing in diverse engineering disciplines. 
  •  To understand the characteristics/properties of several standard/elementary signals and systems. 
  •  To apply the mathematical theory of manipulating/processing signals via appropriate systems to design, develop and establish practical applications. 


 

Course Requirements

Grading Policy
Homework – Homework problems will be assigned in class and usually you are allowed to finish them in a week. Assignments will be due at the beginning of the class period. Late homework will be penalized (10% per day). Students are allowed (and encouraged) to work in groups of two or three on the homework assignments, provided that each person in the group is contributing to each solution.
Quizzes – In-class quizzes will be given throughout the semester to encourage students to keep up-to-date with the material and to ensure that the lectures are effective. The quizzes will take approximately 15 minutes. No provision will be made to make up any quiz. If you miss a quiz, you will receive a 0 for that one. The quizzes will be unannounced (surprise) and they will be administered at the beginning of the class.
Exams – Mid-terms and final exams will cover material from the lectures and homework. Emergency or unexpected issues related to make-up exams will require proper documentation.

Course Outline

Basic signals - unit step, unit impulse, sinusoidal and complex exponential signals - Types of signals- Basic operations on signals-system properties-Time Domain characterization of continuous time and discrete time LTI system-Convolution Integral-Convolution Sum-Analysis of LTI system described by differential and difference equations. 

Fourier series representation of continuous-time periodic signals, properties of continuous-time Fourier series -Fourier transform of continuous-time aperiodic signals - properties of continuous-time Fourier transform - Fourier series representation of discrete-time periodic signals - properties of discrete-time Fourier series - Discrete-time Fourier transform - properties of discrete-time Fourier transform. 

Laplace Transform and Z-Transforms: Bilateral Laplace Transforms – ROC - Inverse Laplace Transforms - Unilateral Laplace Transforms - Bilateral Z-Transform: Definition – ROC - Inverse Z-transforms - Unilateral Z Transforms - Analysis and characterization of LTI system.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

Analysis and design-oriented homework problems will be assigned each week. These assignments will count for 25% of your grade. Three exams (could be take-home or in-class exams) will be given during the semester. These exams will count for 75% of your grade (25% each). Homework is due to the class period after it is assigned. No credit will be given for late homework unless a physician’s excuse is presented or prior authorization by the instructor has been arranged. Students are requested to contact the instructor by SUU email ID only. Homework and take-home exam due dates may be modified from those shown in the syllabus by the instructor based on class progress, the availability of guest lecturers, and other factors. Participating in class discussions, problem-solving, computer simulation activities, and helping others in the class constitute an integral part of the course. Credit for such participation may be added to your grade at the discretion of the instructor.

Attendance Policy

Attendance is required for all lecture classes. Excused absences due to illness, personal or family emergencies, or academic/professional commitments may be granted at the discretion of the instructor.

In accordance with university policies, attendance will be tracked through Canvas.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.
