Course Description

This class will introduce the theory and practice of feedback control systems to students. The topics will include the Laplace transform, control system block diagrams and the transient and steady state response of the control systems. Also, students will learn how feedback systems affect to the transient and steady state response of the control systems. Other topics include dynamic systems, modelling, linearization techniques, and PID controllers. (Fall) [Graded (Standard Letter)]

Program Goals for the Course
 

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of feedback and its application to control systems.
  • Understand and apply the concepts of system response (including transients and steady-state) and of system stability.
  • Apply the principles of feedback control in a broad context of engineering systems.
  • Design control systems for steady-state tracking of reference inputs, disturbance rejection, and sensitivity reduction.
  • Apply techniques (root locus plots, Bode plots, Nyquist plots) to control systems analysis and design.

Homework is due at the end of the following class period unless the instructor specifies the due date.  

Late Assignments 

No credit may be given for late assignments unless a physician’s excuse is presented or prior authorization by the instructor has been arranged.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.
