Course Description

In this course the student will be introduced to the most current 3D solid modeling concepts and principles of parametric design using the SolidWorks software. The student will be introduced to the process of creating and applying robust design principles to intermediate parametric solid models and assemblies. The process of developing and applying formulas as well as spreadsheets to these parametric designs will be presented and applied. The analysis, animation, and simulation will be presented and applied. The most current solid modeling concepts will be introduced and experienced by the students through lecture, training videos, tutorials, and real design projects. Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the creative artistic process as an iterative and recursive practice culminating in an expression of human experience and emotion through a medium
    This Essential Learning Outcome will be met by students applying graphical texture to a 3D Solid Model and creating some type of artistic background
  • Apply artistic concepts and ideas drawn from traditions of artistic creation and theory to better engage with, analyze and understand a creative work
    This Essential Learning Outcome will be met by students designing and 3D Printing their own key chain using ABS plastic as their medium.
  • Examine connections between art and society and articulate how the arts are a historical and cultural phenomenon
    This Essential Learning Outcome will be met by students downloading from the web some type of object to be cut out on the Laser Engraver and assembled by the students.

Specific Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:

  • 2. Create detail drawings from existing solid models
  • 3. Create complex 3D solid models (
  • 4. Create multiple sketch 3D solid models
  • 5. Create a working system of multiple 3D solid models
  • 6. Edit multiple 3D solid models while in a system environment
  • 7. Simulate multiple 3D solid models while in a system environment
  • 8. Develop introductory design skills
  • 9. Develop advanced assembly design skills
  • 10. Download 3D Solid Model from the web for 3D Printing.

Course Requirements

What you will submit: You will submit (in CANVAS)
  • JPEG of the assignment
  • PDF of the assignment
  • SLDPRT of the assignment
  • SLDDRW of the assignment
  • SLDASM of the assignment
You will complete and submit each of the problems at the end of each chapter.
Save all.SLDPRT files until after we complete Chapter 5. We will use these files to edit and modify existing models. Once you have submitted all assignments in Chapter 5, you can delete the .SLDPRT files.
For students wanting supplemental instruction, there are 26 optional step-by-step videos that students can go through on their own. These videos will not be covered in class.

Out-of-class time will be required to complete all of the assigned drawings.
Students will work on drawings while in class. Due dates for each assignment will appear in CANVAS.

Midterm Exam points: Posted in CANVAS
The Midterm exam will be an “in class” exam consisting of a drawing that is in alignment with student skill level at mid-semester. There is no makeup on the midterm.
Final Exam points: Posted in CANVAS
The Final exam will be an “in class” exam consisting of a drawing that is in alignment with student skill level at the end of the semester. There is no makeup on the final. DO NOT ASK TO TAKE THE FINAL EARLY BECAUSE THE ANSWER WILL BE NO. THERE WILL BE A REGULAR FINAL EXAM ONLY GIVEN AND AVAILABLE DURING THE SCHEDULED FINALS TIME ACCORDING TO THE SUU FINALS SCHEDULE.
Final Course Grade: Final Grades will be awarded as what is shown in CANVAS:
To earn a grade of A, students must complete at least 95% of the work and attend class 95% of the time.

Course Outline

Course Structure

This course will use a newly published eBook from Kendall-Hunt publishing. There are 17 Chapters in the book which will be covered in class. Upon completion of each chapter in class, students will complete the problems at the end of each chapter. Once the eBook is completed, we will finish up the semester with additional drawings that I will provide.

Instructor's policies on late assignments and/or makeup work

Due dates for each assignment will appear in CANVAS. No late work will be accepted. As the instructor, I override any information (due dates, assignments) found in CANVAS or the syllabus. Changes to any information will only be made on a corrective basis.
Instructor's Policy on Late Assignments:
  • No late work of any kind will be accepted after the deadline. Due dates will appear in CANVAS. Know how to read due dates in CANVAS.
  • I do not respond to emails asking for deadline extensions
  • I do not respond to emails informing me that I need to reopen an assignment in CANVAS because students missed the due date
  • Submitting work in CANVAS and encountering uploading errors (thinking you have submitted work when in reality you have not, not knowing how to submit work in CANVAS, etc) are not the fault of the instructor and will not result in any type of deadline extension. If you choose to work off campus on an off-campus computer and encounter uploading errors, etc, that is also not the fault of the instructor and will not result in any of type of deadline extension.

Attendance Policy

Attendance will not count towards your grade. However, you strongly recommended and encouraged to attend class each class period. Requirements for assignments will be given in class and may or may not appear in CANVAS. Students who do not attend class regularly are ineligible for any type of out of class tutoring or assistance with assignments.

Any work done outside of class by low attenders (students who attend class less than 75%) will severely scrutinized. If I suspect that you are submitting work you did not complete, you may be asked to demonstrate your ability to complete the work you submitted. If you are unable to complete any work you have submitted, you will receive an F for the course.

Mentoring Statement

If by chance you start falling behind though no fault of your own, PLEASE do not drop the class at the first sign of turbulence, please come and visit me. The sooner you come see me, the sooner we can develop a intervention plan to get you back on track. It is not impossible for students to get back on track with a little extra effort. If for some reason you are feeling bad about life in general, come and see me. I can probably provide you with some insight that will help you feel better about everything.

Academic Credit

According to the federal definition of a Carnegie credit hour: A credit hour of work is the equivalent of approximately 60 minutes of class time or independent study work. A minimum of 45 hours of work by each student is required for each unit of credit. Credit is earned only when course requirements are met. One (1) credit hour is equivalent to 15 contact hours of lecture, discussion, testing, evaluation, or seminar, as well as 30 hours of student homework. An equivalent amount of work is expected for laboratory work, internships, practica, studio, and other academic work leading to the awarding of credit hours. Credit granted for individual courses, labs, or studio classes ranges from 0.5 to 15 credit hours per semester.

Scholastic honesty is expected of all students. Dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent (see SUU Policy 6.33). Regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should check with your individual course instructor.
