Description:
Peer mentors will work with a cohort of 5-8 students from the DRC (Disability Resource Center) each semester. Training will be offered at the beginning of each semester.
Responsibilities:
** Peer mentors are expected to work with DRC students in one-on-one weekly meetings that they coordinate with the student. Possible subjects to discuss are:
- Time management: creating and implementing a weekly academic and personal schedule.
- Goal setting and follow through.
- Academic skill development: study strategies, exam preparedness and assignment prioritization.
- Self-advocacy: Appropriate ways to communicate in social and academic situations.
- Soft skills instruction such as budgeting and stress management techniques.
- Resume, work place readiness and job search guidance.
- Assist with accessing campus resources and DRC accommodations.
- Assistance with registration and filling out financial aid and scholarship applications.
Qualifications:
- A current SUU student (Junior or Senior) with at least a 3.5 GPA, exceptional Sophomores may also be considered.
- Must be available to work at least 10 hours each week for the semester.
- Experience working with or desire to work with individuals with disabilities.
- Compassionate, patient and resourceful.
- Be mature, professional, and have sincere desire to serve and help others.
